  1. Founder of the Roman Catholic Dominican order
  2. of preaching friars. Feast day 7 Aug. Born in
  3. Old Castile, Dominic was sent by Pope
  4. Innocent III in 1205 to preach among the
  5. heretic Albigenesian sect in Provence. In
  6. 1208 the pope instigated the Albigensian
  7. crusade to suppress the heretics by force,
  8. and this was supported by Dominic. In 1215
  9. the Dominican order was given premises at
  10. Toulouse; during the following years Dominic
  11. established friaries at Bologna and elsewhere
  12. in Italy, and by the time of his death the
  13. order was established all over W Europe.
